This year Hants & Dorset Motor Services Limited turns 100, and as the forerunner of what is now largely the morebus network, we're celebrating the milestone with a special event party taking place on Poole Quay on 10 July.
We can date the beginning of Hants & Dorset Motor Services Limited to 17 March 1916, when Bournemouth & District Motor Services was registered as a private company.
Bus services operated by the company increased in extent after the end of the First World War, and in July 1920 the company's title was changed to by then more geographically accurate Hants & Dorset Motor Services. The green buses operated by the company quickly established a good reputation for providing a reliable and friendly service, and the network continued to grow. The Southern Railway acquired a 50% share in 1930, and Hants & Dorset became state owned in 1948.
From 1969 Hants & Dorset was part of the National Bus Company, and from late 1972 the vehicles started to appear in that undertaking's poppy red livery. The Hants & Dorset name disappeared from the sides of buses in April 1983 when the company was broken up into smaller units, although we can claim some continuity as the same cheerful and friendly staff continued to provide the services, with some who commenced employment with Hants & Dorset still, in 2016, working for morebus or Bluestar, 33 years after the old name disappeared from the buses. And the name lives on with our vehicle refurbishment company – Hants & Dorset Trim, based in Eastleigh.
Throughout the day there will be plenty to keep the whole family entertained;
Vintage static bus displays
Vintage bus trips
Entertainment - Marching band, Dorset Troopers, Ukulele band
Giant Connect 4 Game
Side stalls - face painting, hook a bus, H& D Souvenirs
..and so much more
Come along and join in the fun!
All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to our chosen charity - Julia's House
