Local charity aimed at addressing and combating knife crime receives community fund boost

A local charity aimed at combating knife crime, has received a boost from Morebus. 

Changes Are Made (CAM) was created by Tracy Jose, following the fatal stabbing of her 18-year-old grandson Cameron Hamilton in Bournemouth Square, on 5 August 2023. As a much-loved member of his local community, Cam’s passing affected many. 

Through Changes Are Made, his family are devoted to raising awareness around the dangers and possible consequences of carrying a knife. They hope to make a change by sharing what happened to Cameron, not only with young people but with adults too.         

“The main aim of Changes Are Made is to educate, support, deter and empower our young people, with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the dangers and possible consequences of carrying or using knives,” said Tracy. 

“Last year, we spoke to more then 3,000 young people in schools across the BCP area. We are now raising funds to purchase Virtual Reality (VR) headsets because integrating VR into anti-knife crime education offers a powerful and immersive way to engage young people.

“It allows them to safely experience the real-world consequences of carrying a knife, the ripple effects of violent decisions, and the emotional impact of those choices.

“These headsets cost around £850, so we are relying on donations from local people and businesses to help us make this important investment. We applied to Morebus’ community fund for support, and were delighted to receive enough to buy our first headset - which will be put to very good use.”

Richard Wade, Morebus general manager, added: “Changes Are Made was created in the wake of a tragic and avoidable event - the nightmare of any parent. The work this charity does across our local community is absolutely vital, and we are pleased to support them in any way we can.”

The Morebus community fund is open three times a year - in March, July and November.
