Local young carers given chance to attend special activity events - thanks to donation from Morebus

Young carers across the region will have the opportunity to experience special activity events, to provide a break from their responsibilities at home - thanks to a donation from Morebus.

MYTIME Young Carers, based in Broadstone, works towards a vision where young carers are recognised and valued by society - and where their lifelong opportunities are unrestricted.

“Young carers are extraordinary young people, aged between four and 25, who have an unpaid caring responsibility - usually for a parent or sibling,” said Martina Bates, Volunteer Manager and Making Memories Co-ordinator from MYTIME Young Carers.

“They carry immense responsibility while growing up, far too often without any recognition, and try to balance their studies and personal lives along the way.

“MYTIME’s Making Memories programme of events is filled with fun, laughter and chances for them to try something completely new and exciting. It is proven to make young carers feel less stressed and to build new friendships. These activities range from sports like archery, climbing, swimming and ice skating to creative events like learning an instrument, dancing, or arts and crafts.

“We applied to Morebus’ community fund for a donation towards the Making Memories programme - and were delighted to receive enough money to send eight young carers on one of these special activity days which cost £53.54 per young person. We’d like to thank Morebus for this generous gesture.”

Nikki Honer, Morebus head of communications, added: “These young people often sacrifice their own wellbeing, both physical and mental, in order to care for a loved one.

“We are pleased to be able to help in a small way, by giving them the opportunity to simply enjoy childhood and spend time with friends - just as their non-caring peers do.”
